Paint Components: Binder, Pigment and Carrier
Understand binder, pigment, liquid carrier and additive roles in paint, with the differences between water-based liquid paints and dry powder coatings.

In common pigmented paints, the binder, pigment, liquid carrier and coating additives perform different jobs. The binder provides the film-forming and binding function, pigments contribute colour and hiding, the liquid carrier helps deliver the material during application, and additives adjust particular properties. This is a useful component overview for liquid paints, rather than a recipe that every coating must contain. Sherwin-Williams ingredient roles · AkzoNobel binder explanation
What does each paint component do?
| Component | Basic role |
|---|---|
| Binder | Forms and binds the coating film |
| Pigment | Contributes colour and hiding |
| Liquid carrier | Helps deliver and apply the paint |
| Coating additive | Adjusts particular properties |
These are functional groups, rather than a count of individual chemicals. A formulation can contain several ingredients within a group. For example, Caparol’s published declaration for one silicate wall paint lists multiple binder-related substances alongside pigments, fillers, water and additives. Caparol ingredient declaration
Binder and pigment are different roles
A binder holds pigment particles together and helps the coating adhere to the surface. Resins are used as binders in many coatings; resin names a material, while binder describes its function in the formulation. AkzoNobel describes this relationship for coating resins. AkzoNobel resin and binder roles
Binder does not mean one universal resin chemistry. Caparol’s silicate-paint example includes mineral binder constituents as well as a hybrid binder in its declaration. The component’s name alone therefore does not identify its full chemistry or predict the coating’s performance. Caparol material basis and declaration
A pigment is a particulate ingredient. Colour and hiding are important pigment functions in paint: hiding means obscuring the underlying surface. A pigment is distinct from the binder that holds particles in the coating film. Fillers or extender pigments are also listed in coating formulations, so every particulate ingredient should not automatically be treated as a colour-producing pigment. Liquid carrier does not mean organic solvent
The liquid carrier is the liquid medium that helps the paint reach and spread over the surface. In water-based paint, water serves this carrier role. Other liquid paints use organic solvents, such as mineral spirits in the alkyd-paint example described by Sherwin-Williams. The words carrier and organic solvent are therefore not interchangeable. Sherwin-Williams written carrier explanation
Water-based describes the system’s liquid medium; it does not mean that the paint consists only of water. Caparol’s water-containing example also lists binders, pigments, fillers and additives. Caparol ingredient declaration
What is a coating additive?
A coating additive is included to adjust particular formulation, application or film properties. Examples include dispersing agents that help keep pigment distributed and rheology modifiers that alter flow behaviour. These functions differ from the binder’s main film-forming role and the pigment’s colour or hiding role. Sherwin-Williams additive examples
Why powder coatings need a different overview
Dry powder coatings are supplied in solid form without a liquid carrier. BYK describes resin, pigments, fillers and additives among their ingredients. The liquid-paint overview should therefore not be used to assert that every coating contains water or an organic solvent. BYK solid delivery form
These component names explain a formulation’s basic roles. They do not specify proportions, curing conditions, adhesion strength or service life. Continue through Coatings & adhesives for related material concepts.
