Luminaire, Light Source and Lamp: The Basics
Understand luminaire and light-source roles, why lamp can mean different objects, and how integrated LED construction differs from replaceability.

A luminaire provides the structure, optical functions and electrical connections used with a light source. In electric lighting, the light source produces the light, while the surrounding parts support, protect and direct it. This functional distinction remains useful when the source is integrated into the product. CIE luminaire entry · licht.de lighting-object explanation
What is the difference between a luminaire and a light source?
CIE defines a light source broadly as a surface or object emitting light. Its vocabulary includes both self-emitting and non-self-emitting sources. Here, the discussion concerns the source used to produce light in an electric-lighting product, rather than every object covered by that broader definition. CIE light-source entry
For the luminaire, CIE describes equipment that distributes, filters or transforms light, fixes and protects the source, and provides the necessary electrical connections and auxiliary equipment. The light source’s role and the supporting equipment’s roles are therefore different. CIE luminaire entry
Does the word luminaire include the light source?
The boundary depends on the terminology being used. CIE’s cited luminaire entry explicitly excludes the sources themselves. In contrast, licht.de describes the complete lighting body as including the housing, light source, electronics and optics. These descriptions use different boundaries for the named object; neither should be silently substituted for the other. CIE vocabulary boundary · licht.de complete lighting body
When reading a definition or product description, identify whether it refers to the supporting equipment or to the complete unit with its source.
Basic luminaire component roles
| Part or function | Basic role |
|---|---|
| Light source | Produces light |
| Housing / mounting | Support and protect |
| Optical parts | Direct light |
| Electrical parts | Connect and operate |
This is a functional overview, rather than a requirement for four separate removable parts. A product can combine these functions in an integrated construction. The actual components depend on its design. CIE equipment functions · licht.de components and integration
Why can lamp mean different things?
In the IES terminology, a lamp is a manufactured source intended to produce optical radiation. The same entry notes that ordinary speech also uses lamp for a portable luminaire with a shade, reflector, housing or other accessories. In that everyday usage, the source inside may be called a bulb or tube. IES lamp definition and usage note
A phrase such as “table lamp” can therefore name the assembled lighting product, rather than only its light-producing component.
Integrated LED construction and replaceability
licht.de explains that an LED or LED module is often built into the luminaire. Integration describes the construction; replacement capability is a separate product characteristic. licht.de integrated LED context
For example, Signify’s specification for StoreSet Evo product 910505102682 states that a service technician can replace its driver and light source. This is one product’s service arrangement, rather than a promise that every integrated LED source is replaceable or user-replaceable. Signify repair-class statement
